Patrick Griffis, who serves as vp technology in the Office of the CTO at Dolby, has been elected the next president of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. His two-year term will begin Jan. 1.
Griffis currently serves as SMPTE executive vp and has previously held roles including education vp and secretary-treasurer. Beginning in January, outgoing president Matthew Goldman, senior vp technology at MediaKind (formerly known as Ericsson Media Solutions), will serve on the board as immediate past president.
Elected SMPTE officers also include Hans Hoffmann, senior manager, media production technologies, for the European Broadcasting Union’s Technology and Innovation department, who will serve as executive vp; Sara Kudrle, product marketing manager at Imagine Communications, who will serve as education vp; and John E. Ferder, director of engineering at MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems, who will serve as secretary-treasurer.
“SMPTE is building on the success of its (2017) centennial by focusing on new initiatives across its three pillars: standards, education and membership,” said Griffis in a released statement. “We’re embarking on some exciting new projects that will allow the Society to be even more agile in addressing the requirements of modern media and entertainment. I am particularly passionate about expanding our outreach to the next generation of membership and becoming an even more global organization.”
He added, “I look forward to working with my SMPTE and (sister organization) Hollywood Professional Association colleagues to ensure the Society continues to meet the needs of the individuals and organizations advancing the science and the art of next-generation media and entertainment experiences.”
The SMPTE annual Technical Conference & Exhibition is set to kick off Oct. 22 at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles.
