Peter Travis directs Dredd 3D, a futuristic flick replacing Sylvester Stallone with Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, who’s fond of uttering such one-liners as “I’m the law.” In Travis’ Stallone-less version, the titular hero must vanquish the crime boss Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) who controls a destructive, time-stopping drug called Slo-Mo.

LONDON – Pete Travis‘ Dredd 3D, starring Karl Urban (Star Trek) as Judge Dredd, has shot down heavyweight competition from Anna Karenina, Lawless and Total Recall to hit the top spot at the U.K. box office.
It is the first 18 certificate – equivalent to an R rating stateside — to be No. 1 in British theaters since 2010 when Saw 3D hit the heights.
Exact figures are being compiled but the release, distributed by Entertainment Film Distributors, has taken more than a million pounds ($1.65 million) on its opening weekend, ahead of Joe Wright‘s Anna Karenina which sashayed to an estimated £980,000 ($1.6 million).

Created from the iconic British comic strip, the independent British film has been brought to the screen by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) and also stars Olivia Thirlby (Juno), Lena Headey (300), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and Wood Harris (The Wire).
Produced by DNA’s Allon Reich and Andrew Macdonald (28 Weeks Later, Never Let Me Go), the picture is shot in 3D and is set against the backdrop of a future America where the streets of Mega-City One, running from Boston to Washington DC, is run by criminals.
The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner.
