Moviegoers seeing the SpongeBob SquarePants sequel at a California drive-in may be in the mood for nautical nonsense, but what about whips, chains and BDSM?
The WestWind Solano Drive-In in Concord is showing Fifty Shades of Grey next to The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

The unusual pairing may also make for some awkward moments for parents and kids checking out their favorite absorbent yellow sponge, since, according to a report by San Francisco CW affiliate KBCW, Fifty Shades is visible from across the parking lot, where SpongeBob is playing.
Neighbors at the Dallas Garden Senior Park, which has a clear view of the drive-in, have mixed views about the pairing, they told KBCW.
“That’s not a good thing. What do the two have in common? And you can see both theaters,” Joy Peter said.

Meanwhile, neighbor Joanne Gressang didn’t think the situation was that different from when WestWind shows other R-rated movies.
“It won’t be the first time,” she said. “I’m sure they’ve had other R-rated movies there on the screens.”

Phonecalls to WestWind’s Concord drive-in were answered by a recording listing movie times and general information. The theater has not yet responded to The Hollywood Reporter‘s email.
But the telephone recording and theater website both still list Fifty Shades and Sponge Out of Water as the two films playing at the drive-in. Tuesday, the theater’s website notes, is “Family Night.”
