Fox Searchlight Pictures and Red Flag Releasing have acquired The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, written, directed and produced by Jay and Mark Duplass. Red Flag will handle the film’s theatrical distribution in June, while Fox Searchlight will handle all ancillary markets.
The comedy, about two adult brothers who secretly resurrect a childhood Olympic competition during a family reunion, will have its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival Sunday, March 11. Steve Zissis, Mark Kelly and Jennifer Lafleur star, and Stephanie Langhoff produced.
“We formed a great relationship with Jay and Mark on Cyrus and are excited to be partnering with them again,” said Fox Searchlight presidents Nancy Utley and Steve Gilula.
The Duplass Bros. have the comedy Jeff Who Lives at Home opening Friday, March 16, through Paramount Vantage. Their film The Puffy Chair won the Emerging Vision Award at the 2005 SXSW Film Festival.
“We’ve wanted to work with Mark and Jay for a long time and are thrilled to be distributing The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, which is vintage Duplass,” said Red Flag’s Paul Federbush.
Submarine Entertainment’s Josh Braun negotiated the deal with Federbush and Searchlight exec Tony Safford.
Red Flag has released Norwegian Wood, We Were Here and 8: The Mormon Proposition. Upcoming releases include #Regeneration, The Green Wave and High Ground.
Fox Searchlight most recently released Margaret, Shame, The Descendants and The Tree of Life. The company will next release The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in May.
