Gooische Vrouwen 2, a sort of Dutch Desperate Housewives, was the number-one film of 2014 in the Netherlands, beating out all Hollywood contenders.
The feature is the second film adapted from hit TV series Gooische Vrouwen, created by Dutch celebrity Linda de Mol, sister of media mogul and The Voice creator John de Mol. It follows a group of four female friends living in het Gooi, the Dutch equivalent to Beverly Hills.

Gooische Vrouwen 2 sold 1.18 million tickets in the Netherlands for a $12 million (€10.1 million) gross in 2014. That was ahead of Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which earned just over $10 million (€8.5 million) with 833,000 tickets sold in the territory.
The first Goosiche Vrouwen film, released in 2011, earned $21 million, making it one of the most successful Dutch films of all time.

Overall, Dutch films did well last year, with local-language titles taking a 20.8-percent share of the market as measured by ticket sales. Homegrown rom-coms dominated, with other hits including comedies Tuscan Wedding and Soof. Total attendance dropped marginally, with 30.75 million tickets sold last year, but receipts ticked up slightly to $297 million (€250 million).
