Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin and Bella Heathcote are to star in Relic, an Australian indie about three generations of women haunted by aged dementia.
Natalie Erika James is making her feature film debut with the drama about a daughter, mother and grandmother who are haunted by signs of aged dementia that take over their family home. Relic is produced by Carver Films’ Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw, and Nine Stories’ Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker, with Anthony and Joe Russo and Mike Larocca executive producing.
The film is financed by AGBO, Screen Australia and Film Victoria and will start production next week in Victoria, Australia. James and Christian White co-wrote the film.
“Relic was inspired by the experience of Alzheimer’s within my own family and the shift in family dynamics as we slowly have to parent our parents,” said James in a statement. “At its core, it explores the fear and heartbreak of dementia and aging through a horror lens,” she added.
Mortimer is represented by UTA and Lighthouse Management and Media. Nevin is represented by Shanahan Management, and Bella Heathcote is represented by WME, JM Agency and More Medavoy Management.
International sales on Relic will be handled by AGBO and Australian distribution by Umbrella Entertainment.
