Former Emperor Motion Pictures CEO Albert Lee has been appointed executive director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS), succeeding Roger Garcia.
Starting on Nov. 1, Lee will oversee the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), the Summer International Film Festival, and the repertory Cine Fan program. He will report to HKIFFS Chairman Wilfred Wong and the society’s board of directors.
A Hong Kong film industry veteran whose career has spanned nearly four decades, Lee has been involved in film production, distribution and exhibition, and has held senior management positions in Golden Harvest as well as Emperor Motion Pictures, working with stars such as Jackie Chan and Jiang Wen along the way. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Producers’ Branch and the Hong Kong Film Development Council, and has sat on the jury at the Venice and Udine International Film Festivals, as well as the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Brisbane.
Garcia, who was recently made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government for his work in the film industry, will also be succeeded by Asian Film Awards Academy’s current general manager Josie Lin as executive director of the academy.
This is the second major change in the HKIFFS’s long-serving senior management this year, after former artistic director Li Cheuk To left after 35 years of service at the end of the 2018 edition of the festival in April. Geoffrey Wong was named head of programming at the time of Li’s departure.
Established in 1977, the Hong Kong International Film Festival is one of the oldest in Asia. It will hold its 43rd edition from March 18-April 1, 2019.
