Industry veteran Rob Hummel has been named president of Legend 3D, which offers a proprietary 2D-to-3D conversion process.
The executive’s last day as CEO of postproduction, North America at Prime Focus — which offers its own 2D-to-3D conversion process and competes with Legend in the space — was Friday.
Legend 3D was one of the suppliers that handled the 2D-to-3D conversion of the live-action portion of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Prime Focus handled the much-maligned conversion of Clash of the Titans.
Hummel said he is impressed with Legend’s process and quality standards.
“The evolution of 3D only works if we maintain the highest quality standards,” he said. “Legend shares that vision and thinks it is critically important. Otherwise, we damage the whole 3D initiative.”
Hummel had been with Prime Focus (previously Post Logic) since mid-2009. Before that, he served as president of Digital Cinema at Dalsa, which was the maker of an early 4K digital camera.
Before that, Hummel served as senior vp production technology at Warner Bros., where he oversaw digital restoration work on such classics as Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. He also has held positions at Sony Corp., Technicolor, DreamWorks Animation Technology and Disney Studios.
He serves on AMPAS’ Science and Technology Council and chairs the council’s public programs and education arm.
