Digital Cinema stakeholders have been keeping a close watch on Latin America, which is “one of the biggest growth markets” of recent years as just 4900, or 49 percent, of screens have yet gone digital, MKPE Consulting president Michael Karagosian reported earlier this month.
Since CinemaCon, which wrapped April 18, Barco and RealD both had announcements pertaining to efforts in Brazil.
RealD opened its first Latin America-based office in Rio de Janeiro, and Barco revealed that it is supplying 100 digital projectors to Brazilian movie chain Cinesystem Cinemas.
According to Barco, 74 systems will be installed via virtual print fee-based integrator DGT, and the rest will be funded by the chain.
Cinesystem plans to install various Barco projector models, including its compact DP2K-10Sx with integrated media server ad redundant storage, and 4K-capable DP4K-32B for larger screens.
Barco said it would provide 24/7 technical support through local service teams, with parts available from depots in Latin America. In addition, Barco’s installation and training is available in Sao Paulo, Mexico City, and Sacramento.
Last fall during ShowEast, DGT Servicos de Monitoramento, the Brazilian-based arm of DGT Cinema, announced that it would offer digital cinema deployment deals to exhibitors in Latin America. Subject to the terms and conditions under each agreement, Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Warner, and Universal will each separately make Virtual Print Fee contributions.
Integrators now working in Latin American markets also include Arts Alliance Media, GDC, Scrabble, Sony Digital Cinema and Telem.
RealD announced that Sean Spencer will oversee a new Rio office as newly-named director, cinema, Latin America. He previously served as vp for Latin American operations with the Motion Picture Association, as well as executive director of the Television Association of Programmers.
RealD pointed out that according to the MPAA, the Latin American market has seen its total cinema box office grow from approximately $1.4 billion in 2007 to approximately $2.8 billion in 2012, with Brazil’s box office growing from approximately $366 million in 2007 to approximately $839 million in 2012.
There are approximately 1,450 auditoriums equipped with RealD 3D in Latin America including roughly 250 in Brazil and approximately 840 in Mexico, the company reported.
