Director Justin Lin is poised to return to his Fast and Furious family.
Sources say while the deal is not done, Lin is in talks to return to direct the ninth installment of the blockbuster series. Franchise star Vin Diesel revealed the news during a Facebook Live stream Wednesday, where he also teased that star Jordana Brewster would return after sitting out this year’s The Fate of the Furious. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the prospect of Lin returning to direct earlier this month.
Lin has directed four Fast and Furious films beginning with 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. He last helmed 2013’s Fast & Furious 6. James Wan stepped in to direct the seventh installment of the franchise, and F. Gary Gray directed this year’s film, which earned more than $1.2 billion worldwide.
Fast 9 moved its release date back a year, to 2020, earlier this month to accommodate the expanding franchise, which sees a spinoff focused on Dwayne Johnson’s and Jason Statham’s characters set for 2019.
Lin last directed 2016’s Star Trek Beyond and is attached to direct a number of films, including a Space Jam sequel for Warner Bros. and a Hot Wheels movie for Legendary. He is also producing an adaptation of the classic Manga Wolf and Cub for Paramount with an eye to direct.
