Fight Club 2 — the comic book follow-up to Chuck Palahniuk‘s critically acclaimed (and generation-defining) novel, written by Palahniuk himself, with art by Cameron Stewart — launches with a Free Comic Book Day edition available May 2, followed by the first issue of the regular series later that month.
Ahead of that, The Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive reveal of Chip Zdarsky‘s variant cover for the first issue, as well as preview pages from that debut by Palahniuk and Stewart.
Announced last year, the sequel will see Palahniuk follow the unnamed protagonist of his 1996 novel as he deals with life as a husband (to Marla, the object of his affections from the original Fight Club) and father — although it would be hard to argue that his life has turned out as he might have hoped. He does, at least, now have a name: Sylvester. Meanwhile, his violent alter ego Tyler Durden might not be as far away as he would hope …
The variant cover debuting below sees Zdarsky — co-creator of the critically acclaimed Image Comics series Sex Criminals, and currently writing Howard the Duck for Marvel Entertainment — take on Sylvester, complete with World’s Greatest Dad mug and bloodstains. The cover will be exclusively available from Books-A-Million. (David Mack will provide cover art for the regular version of the issue.)
The 10-issue series will launch May 27, the day after the release of Palahniuk’s first collection of short fiction, Make Something Up: Stories You Can’t Unread. Ahead of that, Palahniuk, Stewart and Mack will be making their first public appearance together since the release of preview pages for the series at Seattle’s Emerald City Comicon this weekend. The three will appear with colorist Dave Stewart and editor Scott Allie on a Fight Club 2 panel Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m., with Palahniuk, Mack and both Stewarts also on hand for signing events at the Dark Horse booth during that afternoon.
Below, enjoy a first look at Zdarsky’s cover, as well as a six-page preview of the story from the first pages of Fight Club 2 No. 1, complete with “emergency landing” instructions to bring everyone up to date with what’s happened sar far.
