Fox Networks Group Asia (FNGA) and Singapore-based mm2 Entertainment have partnered to co-produce six Chinese-language features directed by up-and-coming filmmakers from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.
Film producer and distriubtor mm2 will handle the titles’ theatrical releases in the Asia-Pacific region. Through the deal, FNGA has obtained the exclusive pay-TV broadcast and digital rights for the films, and will later air the movies on its premium Chinese movie channel Star Chinese Movies (SCM) in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Southeast Asia, North America, Australia and New Zealand, and on its streaming platform FOX+.
The projects on the slate include More Than Blue, a remake of the 2009 South Korean romantic drama by Tae-yeon Won, to be directed by Taiwanese helmer Gavin Lin (Welcome to the Happy Days) and starring Taiwanese TV actors Jasper Liu and Ivy Chen; Girls, Be Ambitious! by Taiwanese award-winning short film director Tommy Yu, about former adult film stars’ venture into erotic boxing; sports fantasy 1 Sec Champ, by Hong Kong director Hang Chiu (Vampire Cleanup Department); and horror film Walk With Me, to be helmed by Malaysia director Ryon Lee, who is one of the most successful screenwriters of all time in Malaysia in terms of domestic box office. The film will star Hong Kong actresses Michelle Wai and Anna Ng.
Also from Malaysia, director Quek Shio Chuan will be behind the autism drama Guang, remade from his 2011 short film of the same name, which has received awards at film festivals in Taiwan, Italy and Spain.
Rounding out the lineup is Zombiepura, the first feature film by Singaporean filmmaker Jacen Tan. Tan’s first short film, Tak Giu, was a viral hit in 2005, receiving over 100,000 views at the time.
FNGA last year announced the production of two original Asian miniseries, including the five-part financial drama The Trading Floor, produced and starring Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau, and police procedural thriller series Stained, starring local veterans Kara Wai and Anthony Wong. Both series will be launched on SCM and Fox+ later this year.
