MEXICO — Shooting begins later this month on Gloria, a biopic about Mexican pop singer Gloria Trevi from Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings producer Barrie Osborne.
Osborne is producing alongside Alan Curtiss (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World), Mexico’s Rio Negro and Ocean Films Brasil. Set to shoot in Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro, Gloria (working title) marks the directorial debut of Swiss helmer Christian Keller.
Known as the “Mexican Madonna” for her provocative lyrics and edgy performances in the 1990s, Trevi’s career came crashing down in the late ’90s when she and her former manager were accused of luring young girls into a cult-like pornographic ring. Trevi went on the lam and was later arrested in Brazil, where she was held in a prison for more than four years. She was released in 2004 when a court found her innocent on charges of kidnapping, rape and corruption of minors. After returning to Mexico, she staged a successful career comeback.
The Mexican daily Milenio quoted the singer-songwriter earlier this week as saying she did not authorize the biopic. “I don’t know what they’re going to say about me,” she said. “If they do something, it’s something I have not authorized.”
Asked if she would take legal action, Trevi responded: “I have nothing to do with that, that’s why I have a legal department.”
Sofia Espinosa, who appeared in the HBO prison drama Capadocia, stars as Trevi.
