The globally addictive videogame “Final Fantasy” is celebrating its 25th birthday this year. Gosh, has it been that long? To make a big splash, the game’s maker, Square Enix, teamed up with Prada for a 12-page men’s fashion spread in Arena Homme+.
The magazine was allowed to use “Final Fantasy XIII-2” characters as Prada menswear models. Even the game’s female lead character, Lightning, appears wearing Prada’s Spring/Summer 2012 menswear.
FF fans may be surprised seeing their fave characters dressed so casually. The game’s character designer, Tetsuya Nomura, is known for an extravagant style inspired by Japanese pop culture and street fashion.
The use of computer-generated virtual models is already happening in fashion ads and the the virtual imaging technology is also being used on virtual fashion weight loss, hair and makeup websites.
H&M recently had to defend its use of virtual models used for its lingerie and swimwear online campaigns. And actors or celebrities appearing in video games is also commonplace. But using video game virtual characters to advertise clothes is breaking new ground in mixing and melding our reality with the virtual world.
“Our Spring issue focuses on a world of direction and escapism, and having a visually stunning videogame franchise such as ‘Final Fantasy’ work alongside us and a leading fashion brand like Prada to create something so unique is incredible,” said Max Pearmain, Arena Homme+‘s editor. “I’ve always been interested by the power of videogames and their place in society, and the amount of work that’s gone into this project blows my mind. We’re incredibly pleased with the result.”
“The Final Fantasy series is known for its creativity and innovation; so working with Prada, a renowned fashion house with such beautiful clothing, was a very exciting opportunity. The images we have been able to create together are vibrant and unique,” added “Final Fantasy XIII-2″ producer Yoshinori Kitase.
