Lionsgate has revealed a first look at Mark Wahlberg as an oil-drenched hero in Peter Berg‘s Deepwater Horizon, which has started shooting in New Orleans.
Wahlberg plays Mike Williams, the true-life chief technician on the BP drilling rig who became the face of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico ecological disaster when he told his story on CBS’ 60 Minutes. The infamous British Petroleum oil rig caught fire and exploded on April 20, 2010, while drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 crewmembers and causing the largest offshore oil spill in United States history.
Lionsgate in a statement said the movie “chronicles the courage of those who worked on the Deepwater Horizon and the extreme moments of bravery and survival in the face of what would become one of the biggest manmade disasters in world history.”
Wahlberg is starring alongside Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Dylan O’Brien and Gina Rodriguez in the disaster pic. Deepwater Horizon is produced by Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment and Participant Media, di Bonaventura Pictures, Closest to the Hole and Leverage Entertainment.
Berg is directing the screenplay from Matthew Sand and Matthew Michael Carnahan. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and David Womark are producing, with executive producer credits shared by Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King.
Lionsgate is set to release Deepwater Horizon via its Summit Entertainment label on Sept. 30, 2016.
