Olivia Cooke gained attention for her performance in the 2015 Sundance standout Me, Earl and the Dying Girl. From there, the Bates Motel actress landed the female lead in Steven Spielberg’s tentpole adaptation of Ready Player One, but first she will be back on the fall festival circuit with the indie Katie Says Goodbye.
The coming-of-age drama centers on a young waitress (Cooke) in the American Southwest who is working towards moving to San Francisco, but her plans and hard work are derailed when she falls in love with an ex-convict, played by Girls actor Christopher Abbott.
Katie Says Goodbye is the feature directorial debut of writer-helmer Wayne Roberts, who first envisioned Katie’s story as a novel but was was encouraged to make the movie by Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin, who both attended NYU film school.
With Durkin on board as an executive producer, Roberts went looking for his Katie.
“When I saw Olivia’s headshot I knew that she was Katie,” said the filmmaker, who hadn’t seen any of Cooke’s past work before he cast her in his project. “I don’t watch TV, so I was unaware of her [television] work beforehand and I had never seen Me, Earl and the Dying Girl.”
He continued: “We sat down for a meeting and hit it off and both knew it was meant to be.”
Katie Says Goodbye, which also stars Jim Belushi and Mireille Enos, shot over six weeks during the winter in New Mexico, in the outskirts of Albuquerque. Regarding what he is most looking forward to about the upcoming film festivals, Roberts said, “I am most excited to just watch the film with an actual audience full of people I don’t know. I am excited for people to finally see Olivia’s performance.”
