First Poster for Tom Cruise’s ‘Oblivion’ Spells Doom for Manhattan

Talk about concrete jungles.

The Empire State Building becomes a waterfall in the arresting first poster for Oblivion, Universal’s future-set Tom Cruise movie, the second from Tron: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski. 

The poster also features a striking single-pilot spacecraft and a lone figure — presumably Cruise — gazing up at the rocky natural formation that stands where Manhattan once did. Echoes of Planet of the Apes and the half-buried remains of the Statue of Liberty abound.

Tagline: “Earth is a memory worth fighting for.”

Based on the graphic novel co-written by Kosinski and recently rewritten by white-hot Star Wars: Episode VIII scribe Michael Arndt, Oblivion tells the story of a veteran soldier dispatched to a distant planet to destroy the remains of an alien race.

Due in theaters in April, it’s the first of back-to-back sci-fi tentpoles for the Jack Reacher star — the second being All You Need Is Kill, set for a 2014 release.
