Despite the well-remembered Queen song, it turns out that Flash Gordon will have more than 14 hours to save the Earth. Dynamite Entertainment has announced a new ongoing series featuring the character, just in time for his 80th anniversary.
Flash Gordon spins out of the current Kings Watch mini-series re-introducing Flash alongside other King’s Feature Syndicate characters like the Phantom and Mandrake the Magician, and will be written by Kings Watch writer Jeff Parker, with art by Evan “Doc” Shaner and colors from Jordie Bellaire.
STORY: Dynamite and Roberson Put a New Shine on ‘Doc Savage’
The character first appeared on January 7, 1934 in a newspaper strip written and drawn by the great Alex Raymond, before being adapted across multiple media, including both movie serials in the 1930s and a full-length movie in 1980, as well as television series, radio shows and multiple comic books. Although the newspaper strip still runs in some outlets, its last original episode ran back in 2003, with all subsequent strips being reprints of earlier material.
“We’re bringing Flash back for a new audience,” Parker said about the new monthly series. “It’s over-the-planet high action and adventure where Flash’s spirit and optimism are as powerful as anything the forces of Ming the Merciless can dish out.”
Flash Gordon #1 will be released digitally and in comic stores this April.
