Indo-Canadian screenwriter and director Deepa Mehta will be the guest of honor at Florence’s River to River Indian Film Festival. Most widely known for her elements trilogy (Fire, Earth, Water), Mehta will receive a career retrospective in the Tuscan city.
Mehta’s film Water in 2007 became Canada’s first film to receive an Oscar nomination in the foreign language category. Other films to be screened include Midnight’s Children, Heaven on Earth, Bollywood/Hollywood, and the Italian premiere of her latest film, Beeba Boys, an action thriller where rival gangs fight to take control of Vancouver’s arms and drug trade.
The 15th River to River Florence Indian Film Festival takes place Dec. 5 to 10 with 30 films and a variety of special events. It is the first festival in the world completely devoted to films from and about India. The festival runs between Florence and Milan, and for the first time Bologna, in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna. Last year the festival honored actor Irrfan Khan.
