The Debt has found a distributor in Focus Features and Universal Pictures International.
The Miramax movie, which stars Helen Mirren and Sam Worthington amongst others, found itself adrift when Disney shut down its Miramax label. After a premiere at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, it was due to open in December but the sale of the specialty division scuttled those plans.
Now the Nazi-hunting espionage thriller directed by John Madden will be released domestically by Focus August 31. UPI will release it internationally.
The movie cuts between two time periods to tell the fictional story of how three young Israeli Mossad agents on a secret mission capture and kill a notorious Nazi war criminal in 1965. Thirty years later, a man claiming to be the Nazi surfaces in Ukraine, and one of the former agents must go back undercover to seek out the truth.
“We are delighted that Focus and Universal Pictures International have come on board,” said producer Kris Thykier in a statement. “Their enthusiasm for the movie is palpable, their track record is second to none, and we couldn’t wish for better partners. We are especially grateful to the new Miramax for their commitment to finding the right home for the film.”
