Focus Features will distribute Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything, setting it for a platform release beginning November 7.
The Working Title film stars Les Miserables actor Eddie Redmayne and Like Crazy star Felicity Jones as his wife. The romantic drama, which focuses on the relationship between Hawking and his wife, traces Hawking’s life from the 1960s as he studies at Cambridge University through his scientific breakthroughs and the early development of his ALS.

Jane Hawking’s memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life With Stephen was used as inspiration for the project, which is directed by James Marsh from a screenplay by Anthony McCarten. McCarten is also producing with Lisa Bruce (producer of Working Title’s Mary and Martha) and Working Title co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
The film, which will expand into more theaters on Nov. 14 and Nov. 21, also stars Emily Watson and David Thewlis.
“This extraordinary love story between one of the greatest minds of our time, Stephen Hawking, and his first wife Jane is profoundly moving and inspirational, with heart and humor. Under the dynamic direction of James Marsh, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones deliver performances of stunning emotional power,” said Focus CEO Peter Schlessel in a statement.
Focus’ upcoming films include The Signal; Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here; dramatic thriller Kill the Messenger and Laika Entertainment’s family movie The Boxtrolls.
