COLOGNE, Germany – Chris Kraus, director of the award-winning Four Minutes and The Poll Diaries has signed on to adapt Dead Lovely, the darkly-comic novel of a Highland trek gone horribly wrong by Australian-born, Scottish-based author Helen FitzGerald.
Dead Lovely, alternatively described as a black comedy and a psycho thriller, centers on best friends Krissie and Sarah who go on a trip to the Scottish Highlands to mend their friendship. But a dose of magic mushrooms and some suppressed hostility send things spiraling out of control. FitzGerald’s debut novel has been translated into several languages and was a best-seller across Europe.
Kraus, one of Germany’s most acclaimed directors, had his international breakthrough with Four Minutes, the story of a young murder and secret music prodigy. It won the Lola, Germany’s equivalent of the Oscar, and launched the career of star Hannah Herzsprung (The Reader). His most recent feature, The Poll Diaries, won four Lolas at this year’s awards. Dead Lovely will be his English-language debut.
Berlin-based Kordes & Kordes, which produced both Four Minutes and The Poll Diaries will handle production on Dead Lovely.
