BUENOS AIRES – Following its official world premiere in Rio de Janeiro’s recently inaugurated Cinepolis Lagoon multiplex, Fox’s biggest 3D animated film of the year Rio will hold its very first public screenings this Friday in the CineCarioca Nova Brasília film theater located inside the favela compound Complexo do Alemao, according to a report by Globo.
The three-square-mile complex comprises 15 former shantytowns in Rio de Janeiro. The area used to be tightly controlled and governed by drug trafficking gangs, until it made worldwide headlines last year when it was taken over by a joint task force made Rio’s special police operations squad, Army and Navy troops in a widespread law enforcement effort to finally secure and “liberate” the area.
Director Carlos Saldanha, responsible for the Ice Age trilogy and co-director of Robots, will join part of the cast to attend a special screening for public school students and guests on Friday, when he will also receive the Pedro Ernesto Medal from Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Paes. The event is will be followed by three screenings that will be open to the general public.
This first series of open screenings will take place before the film’s official release on April 8, and after its all-star launch organized by Fox last Tuesday in the new Cinepolis multiplex located in Lagoa, in southern Rio. Fox’s huge press campaign included a big but short press conference for international journalists with the presence of stars Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jamie Foxx, Jemaine Clement, Rodrigo Santoro, and musicians Will.i.am, Bebel Gilberto, Carlinhos Brown, Sergio Mendes, and Taio Cruz.
Rio features the story of Blu, a domesticated, flight-challenged macaw who leads a quiet life in a cage in small-town Minnesota until he meets a fiercely independent bird named Jewel. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro.
