Fresh Off the Boat creator Nahnatchka Khan has signed on to make her feature directorial with an untitled romantic comedy for Netflix.
The move reteams her with her Boat star Randall Park, who is starring in the project with Ali Wong, the standup comedian and actress who is also a writer on Fresh Off the Boat.
Wong and Park wrote the script for the project with Michael Golamco. The pair are also producing with Nathan Kahane and Erin Westerman of Good Universe.
The script tells of childhood sweethearts who have a falling out and don’t speak for 15 years. They reconnect as adults when Sasha (Wong), now a celebrity chef opening a restaurant in San Francisco, runs into Marcus (Park), a happily struggling musician still living at home working for his dad. The old sparks are still there but challenges arise when they question whether they can adapt to each other’s worlds.
The movie is scheduled to start shooting in Vancouver and San Francisco in May.
Brendan Ferguson is exec producing. Golamco and Good Universe’s Brady Fujikawa are co-producing.
Wong made a buzzy splash with her 2016 standup special Baby Cobra and co-stars on ABC’s comedy American Housewife.
Park will next be seen in Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp as well as Seth Rogen’s Flarsky.
Khan, who also created the shot Don’t Trust the B— In Apartment 23, has previously directed episodes of both Apartment 23 and Boat.
