In the aftermath of the massive success of Halloween, another venerable horror franchise could be getting the reboot treatment.
LeBron James’ SpringHill Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment, the latter of which produced It, are in talks to team up to produce a new iteration telling of the gory happenings at Camp Crystal Lake, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
While the intense interest in Halloween is partly a factor in the coming-together reboot, another is the legal case, decided just under a month ago, which saw original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller regain the rights to his screenplay.
The plaintiffs, which include producer and director Sean Cunningham, could still appeal, and one item not on the table at the trial was who controls the rights to the character of Jason Vorhees, who dies as a young boy in the first movie but becomes the unstoppable hockey mask-wearing killer the franchise would become known for.
Settlements or future legal battles could still occur. Another foil is that the legal decision seems to indicate that Miller will control the rights in the U.S. The producers and Warner Bros., which last made a movie through New Line, control certain international territories.
SpringHill and Vertigo’s reboot is in the early stages, with no writer or director yet on board.
The original 1980 horror movie told of a group of counselors at the fictional Camp Crystal Lake who are dispatched one by one by an unknown murderer. The assailant is later revealed to be Mrs. Vorhees, the vengeance-seeking mother of a young boy, Jason, who drowned while at camp because the counselors were busy having sex and not watching him.
Bloody Disgusting first reported the news of the reboot.
