German VFX Giant Pixomondo Expands Canadian Base

TORONTO – VFX Group Pixomondo is expanding its studio presence in Toronto.

The visual effects contributor to HBO’s Game of Thrones is to occupy a newly renovated building at Revival 629, the former Toronto Film Studios site on Eastern Avenue in downtown Toronto.

The German visual effects house last year closed its operations in London, while also establishing a studio presence at Pinewood Toronto Studios on Toronto’s portlands.

Pixomondo, which did lead visual effects work on Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo, also has studios in Germany, the U.S. and China.

“We’re very excited to be joining Revival in building a community for creative minds,” said Pixomondo CEO Thilo Kuther in a statement on Thursday.

Revival 629 reopened the film studio lot in the fall of 2012 and has hosted TV series shoots for Global Television’s Remedy, HBO’s Sensitive Skin, Nickelodeon/YTV’s Max & Shred and YTV’s Stanley Dynamic.

Pixomondo joins a host of other foreign VFX players like BUF, Technicolor, Framestore, Cinesite and Moving Picture Company that have set up in Canada thanks to the offer of generous federal and provincial tax credits and subsidies for digital work completed locally.
