It’s time to get honest about the most divisive movie of the summer.
Director Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot faced an uphill battle from the beginning, with its trailer the most disliked in YouTube history and the film going on to open to tepid box-office returns (and a $70 million loss for Sony).
In a nod to the vitriolic Internet comments the film inspired, Honest Trailers preemptively disabled the comments for this one.
“Get ready for the film everyone rushed to judge before they’d even seen it, and proved to all the haters,” the narrator says before trailing off. “… it’s bad. I’m not going to lie to you guys.”
Honest Trailers also used its platform to address the ugly sides of fan reactions, asking Internet users not to harass the stars of a film just because they happen to be in a subpar movie. (Leslie Jones temporarily left Twitter after being subjected to misogynistic and racist hate posts over the summer.)
“Don’t waste your time trolling the cast just because they agreed to be in a bad movie. You hate it? Well fine then. Go support something original then,” rants the narrator. “How did a Ghostbusters movie become the most political thing in America in an election year?”
