Swedish actor Per Oscarsson, who co-stars in two films based on Stieg Larsson’s wildly popular Millennium book trilogy, appears to have died in a house fire, police told the Associated Press on Sunday.
The remains of one person were found Sunday in the ashes of the house and are probably those of the 83-year-old actor or his wife, 67-year-old Kia Ostling, a police spokesman said. Both were reported missing by relatives, who say the couple apparently was home when the fire destroyed the house early Friday. Authorities are still searching for the remains of a second person.
Oscarsson, described as a “giant of Swedish cinema,” has starred in more than 100 Swedish films and TV series. He won a best actor award at the Festival de Cannes in 1966 for his role in “Hunger.”
In the Swedish versions of The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked Hornet’s Nest, based on Larsson’s books, Oscarsson played Holger Palmgren, the legal guardian to the heroine, Lisbeth Salander.
