Video-on-demand distribution company GoDigital has acquired U.S. rights to The Power of Two, a documentary about twins who are stricken with cystic fibrosis and survive rare double lung transplants.
The film from director Marc Smolowitz — producer of Academy Award-nominated documentary The Weather Underground — will be released June 5 on cable, satellite and digital VOD services. The VOD debut will follow a limited theatrical run beginning in April.
Separately, Uplink has acquired Japanese rights to the documentary and will release it in theaters there in October.
The film centers on half-Japanese twins Anabel Stenzel and Isabel Stenzel Byrnes, who battle the fatal genetic disease cystic fibrosis and undergo double lung transplants. The Power of Two is the directorial debut of Smolowitz, who produced The Weather Underground (2003) and Trembling Before G-d (2001).
The Power of Two was produced by Smolowitz, attorney Andrew Byrnes and former Facebook chief strategic officer Chris Kelly. The film has screened at several film festivals and bowed in August at the International Documentary Association’s DocuWeeks festival.
Santa Monica-based GoDigital purchased VOD competitor Might Entertainment in January. As part of the deal, GoDigital absorbed Might’s output arrangements, in addition to the firm’s cable, satellite, Internet protocol television and broadband VOD distribution deal with Lionsgate. GoDigital now has more than 1,000 catalog films.
The Power of Two filmmakers were represented by Kevin Iwashina of Preferred Content in the deals with GoDigital and Uplink.
