She may not have won a Golden Globe this time around, but with a record 29 nominations to her name and eight wins, Meryl Streep has earned her fair share of anecdotes from the event over the years.
Appearing on the BBC’s The Graham Norton Show, which aired on Friday night, the Into the Woods star recounted one of her earliest memories from the Globes, back in 1980, when it was a “little afternoon event record on CCTV for the L.A. County area only.”

“I was there for Kramer vs. Kramer just after giving birth to my first child,” the star said. “In those days, they didn’t lend dresses, and I didn’t have any more to buy something, so I wore my wedding dress.”

Streep continued with more detail. “It was a perfectly nice white silk dress, but the luncheon went on, and I was breastfeeding, and two o’clock came, three o’clock came, and boom!” she said with a laugh, indicating that she started to lactate.

“It was not good, and I sat with my arms crossed over my chest. They called my name, and I walked to the stage with my arms crossed and accepted the award one-handed, while still covering my breasts,” Streep added. “They must have thought I was so odd. It was so embarrassing. But only to L.A. County. No one else saw!”
Also on the talk show, Streep recalled an audition for the 1976 film King King, having been brought in front of producer Dino De Laurentiis by his son, who had seen the then-unknown actress in a play.
She claimed that De Laurentiis asked his son in Italian “Why do you bring me this ugly thing?” But Streep — who could speak the language — said she responded: “I’m sorry I’m not beautiful enough to be in King Kong.”
