After nearly four decades, Sylvester Stallone received his first Golden Globe for the role of Rocky Balboa. Stallone took home the best supporting actor award for his performance in Rocky-spinoff, Creed, at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.
In 1977, Sylvester Stallone’s breakout performance in Rocky landed him nominations at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, but he was unable to win an award at either event. Thirty-nine years later, Stallone received the first standing ovation of the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards when he took the stage after beating out fellow nominees Paul Dano (Love and Mercy), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), and Michael Shannon (99 Homes) for the best supporting actor award. The 39 year gap between nominations for the same role gives Stallone a record not likely to be topped any time soon.

“I’m gonna try not to get emotional because I’m the sum total of everyone I’ve ever met and so I was lucky to absorb some of it,” Stallone began in his acceptance speech. “Last time I was here, it was 1977 and I was kind of hit by tumbleweed. It was a long time ago. It was a different situation. And the view is so beautiful now.” He went on to thank his family, Adam Venit (who convinced him to join the cast of Creed), the producers who took a chance on him and Rocky back in the 70’s, and “Most of all,” he said, “I wanna thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had.”
