The Gotham Awards traditionally marks the official start of Oscar season, recognizing the best in independent film. Recent past winners have included Oscar nominees Inside Llewyn Davis, The Act of Killing, Moonrise Kingdom, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Beginners, The Tree of Life, Winter’s Bone and The Hurt Locker.
Swinton, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in Michael Clayton, this year starred in Wes Anderson‘s The Grand Budapest Hotel, Jim Jarmusch‘s Only Lovers Left Alive and Bong Joon-Ho‘s Snowpiercer.
Miller’s latest film, Foxcatcher, debuted at Cannes to rave reviews and is being seen as an Oscar contender ahead of its Nov. 14 release by Sony Pictures Classics. Miller’s last film Moneyball received six Oscar nominations and his prior movie, Capote, earned him a best director Oscar nomination and star Philip Seymour Hoffman an Academy Award for best actor. Miller received the breakthrough director and best feature award for Capote at the 2005 Gotham Awards.

“We are excited to have Tilda Swinton and Bennett Miller as this year’s actor and director honorees,” said Joana Vicente, executive director of the Independent Filmmakers Project, which presents the Gotham Awards. “Swinton’s broad and iconoclastic body of work permeates the indie film landscape, thrilling and challenging audiences. Miller’s films, both narrative and documentary, have similarly made an indelible mark on the independent scene to great critical acclaim.”
Swinton joins previous actor tribute recipients including Matt Damon, Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet and last year’s honorees, Forest Whitaker and James Gandolfini. Past director honorees include David Cronenberg, Spike Lee, David O. Russell, Martin Scorsese, Gus Van Sant and last year’s tribute recipient, Richard Linklater.
The 24th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards are set for Monday, Dec. 1 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. Nominees in the Gotham Awards’ competitive categories will be announced on Oct. 23.
