The Gotham Awards are typically a glitzy star-studded event in New York, but this year, like so many awards shows over the past 10 months, the event is deploying a mix of live and virtual elements in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
But fans will still be able to watch the action unfold online, starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Monday, Jan. 11.
First Cow leads the nominations for the 30th annual awards, celebrating the best in independent film, with four nominations. The Vast of Night, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Nomadland, The Forty-Year-Old Version, Saint Frances and Miss Juneteenth follow with two noms each.
For the first time, all best feature nominees are directed by women. Nominees include Kitty Green’s The Assistant, Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow, Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland and Natalie Erika James’ Relic.
With eight nods, Netflix received the most nominations of any studio on the list, thanks to films such as Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, The Forty-Year-Old Version and Cuties, along with television series Immigration Nation and Unorthodox.
In television, HBO’s Betty and I May Destroy You go up against Hulu’s Taste the Nation, FX’s Dave and Showtime’s Work in Progress in the short form breakthrough series category.
In addition to competitive awards, the show will present five tributes throughout the evening to Chadwick Boseman (actor tribute, posthumous), Viola Davis (actress tribute), Steve McQueen (director tribute), Ryan Murphy (industry tribute) and the cast of The Trial of Chicago 7 (the inaugural ensemble tribute).
