Disney this week revealed the new Guardians of the Galaxy ride, which will replace the Tower of Terror in California Adventure when it opens next summer.
Fans of the Marvel film seem to think the revamped ride looks pretty sweet, but those loyal to the Twilight Zone-themed ride are not pleased with the transformation.
So far, the Disney YouTube video giving the first glimpse of the Guardians ride has more thumbs down than thumbs up. There are also plenty of negative comments. However, on the Disney blog, there are nothing but positive comments about the new ride.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! will still be a free-fall ride, but will now resemble a power plant called “The Collector’s Fortress.” Benicio Del Toro played the Collector in the 2014 hit.
Joe Rohde, portfolio creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, explained the new ride as a “huge power plant kind of a place that’s surging with power, rising up into the sky and packed with all of [the Collector’s] rare, irreplaceable collections from around the world.”
The Disney blog described the ride as an “epic new adventure combining the familiar, breathtaking free-fall sensation with all-new visual and audio effects, including music inspired by the popular Guardians of the Galaxy film soundtrack.”
The ride will also feature a variety of randomized experiences, so guests will not be able to anticipate the drops, which can be done now by those who go on Tower enough times.
The ride’s opening will coincide with the opening of Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is slated for May 5, 2017.
