Beyond the Lights star Gugu Mbatha-Raw and director Gina Prince-Bythewood are reuniting for An Untamed State, an adaptation of Roxane Gay’s debut novel.
Prince-Bythewood will co-write the adaptation with Gay.
Michael De Luca will produce the project through his De Luca Productions banner with Prince-Bythewood. Mindy Schultheis and Michael Hanel will executive produce.
The story focuses on a Haitian-American woman who was kidnapped for ransom in front of her husband and child. It chronicles her captivity for 13 days and her struggle to come to terms with the ordeal in its aftermath.
Mbatha-Raw and Prince-Bythewood previously teamed on the 2014 drama Beyond the Lights, which received an Oscar nomination.
Prince-Bythewood’s writing and helming credits also include The Secret Life of Bees (2008) and Love & Basketball (2000), among others, and she is currently executive producing the series Shots Fired for Fox, Imagine Television and Undisputed Cinema. Prince-Bythewood is repped by CAA and Del, Shaw.
Mbatha-Raw, who previously starred in Concussion opposite Will Smith, is repped by CAA, Authentic Talent and Literary and the U.K.’s Curtis Brown Group.
Gay, who also wrote the New York Times best-seller Bad Feminist, is repped by RWSG and LMQ.
