Guillermo del Toro is going back to horror with Crimson Peak, zeroing in on the haunted-house thriller as his next film.
Legendary, which is behind del Toro’s Pacific Rim — a tentpole-sized, monsters-vs.-machines movie that opens next summer — has closed a deal with the filmmaker to pick up the project from Universal. That’s where it was initially set in 2008.
Legendary will produce and be a participating financing partner on the movie, with Universal Pictures retaining an option to also finance at a later date.
Lucinda Coxon also has been tapped to rewrite del Toro and Matthew Robbins’ original script. Coxon hasn’t met with del Toro yet, according to insiders, but is scheduled for a face to face next week.
Both Legendary and del Toro are eyeing a February 2014 start for Crimson Peak, which hopes to channel the gothic haunted pictures of yore. He is expected to shoot the pilot for The Strain, based on the books he wrote with Chuck Hogan, before then.
