For those who can’t attend At Home With Monsters — the exhibition of more than 500 of Guillermo del Toro’s drawings, paintings and concept pieces from work of his own and other movies currently running at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art — the next best thing is about to be released: Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters: Inside His Films, Notebooks, and Collections, the accompanying book from Insight Editions.
Written by Britt Salvesen and Jim Shedden, with additional material from Paul Koudounaris, Keith McDonald and Roger Clark, the 152 page hardcover includes images of artwork on display as part of the exhibition, as well as pages from Del Toro’s private sketchbooks, an interview with (and introduction from) Del Toro himself, and commentary from artists and figures from the art world. The collection also includes a new cover from Crimson Peak and Pacific Rim concept artist Guy Davis.
Ahead of its release at the end of this month, Heat Vision has an exclusive look at pages from the At Home With Monsters book:
Page 14: Life-size sculpture by Thomas Kuebler of Hans from Freaks beside cabinet of monster figures at Bleak House.
Page 20 (top): Portrait of H.P. Lovecraft by Michael Deas hanging above the mantle in the Horror Library at Bleak House; (bottom): Life-size sculpture by Thomas Kuebler of Edgar Allan Poe reading in the Horror Library.
Page 21: Forrest Ackerman miniature and portrait in the Horror Library.
Page 58: Life-size sculpture of Linda Blair as Regan MacNeil in The Exorcist, sculpted by Patrick Magee.
Page 136: Guillermo del Toro, Blue Notebook, Page 24A.
The hardcover Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters: Inside His Films, Notebooks, and Collections will be published by Insight Editions on Aug. 30 for $29.99. The At Home With Monsters exhibition runs at LACMA until Nov. 27.
