Hailee Steinfeld may be best known as an actress, but she’s also a singer, so given that she was part of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” girl squad, it wasn’t totally random that she was at the VMAs on Sunday. Appropriately enough, her new focus on singing came into play with her makeup.

“For the VMAs, I had in my head the word ‘pop,’ ” her makeup artist, Stephen Sollitto, tells Pret-a-Reporter. “Hailee just came out with her new song, and she’s transitioning to a pop artist. She’s still young, so I wanted her look to be colorful but not garish.”

Sollitto decided to infuse her face with color in subtle ways — a peachy pink lip and royal blue eye. “This look is modern and sleek,” he says. “Her outfit is white, so I didn’t want to go too neutral with the lip because it would have washed her out. And I wanted to give her a strong, sleek eye — royal blue to make it more colorful and exciting, a little more than plain black eyeliner.”

Key to the look: Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour in Lagoon ($24), which he traced over Steinfeld’s black cat-eye, from the inner crease outward and down to the lash line. As for her plump pout, Sollitto made sure it was moisturized using ReVive Intensite Moisturizing Lip Balm ($60) and then added Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Bare Baby ($24) all over, as well as Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Petal Pink ($28) in the inner and center parts to make it look like she’d “had a pink popsicle.”
