Some people, it seems, never learn, no matter how many refrigerators get thrown through the air as a result of nuclear explosions. To wit: Harrison Ford apparently is talking about why it would be “perfectly appropriate and OK” for him to play Indiana Jones one more time.
A report from the Daily Telegraph quotes the Star Wars and Ender’s Game star as saying, “We’ve seen the character develop and grow over a period of time, and it’s perfectly appropriate and OK for him to come back again with a great movie around him where he doesn’t necessarily have to kick as much ass.”
He continued, “To me, what was interesting about the character was that he prevailed, that he had courage, that he had wit, that he had intelligence, that he was frightened and that he still managed to survive. That I can do.”
On the one hand, it’s nice to see Ford appreciating the fact that no one really wants to see a 71-year-old attempt to pull the same type of physical derring-do that made Indiana Jones so successful in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark or 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. On the other, few really seemed to enjoy the previous attempt to resurrect the franchise in 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, either — especially the fact that Ford found himself replaced by Shia LaBeouf when it came to the more physical activities required by the plot.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull might have been successful — It almost doubled its $185 million production budget in domestic box office alone — but fans seemed disappointed by the movie. Bearing that in mind, is there really that many people out there hoping for (and, maybe more importantly, optimistic about) a fifth Indiana Jones movie at this point?
