J.K. Rowling: I Made a Mistake With the ‘Harry Potter’ Ending

J.K. Rowling is second-guessing the ending to her beloved Harry Potter book series.

In an interview for the upcoming issue of Wonderland magazine, Rowling says that Hermione Granger should have married Harry instead of Ron Weasley.

“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment,” she says, as excerpted by the U.K.’s Sunday Times. “That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”

In the epilogue to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which is set 19 years later, it’s revealed that Harry married Ginny Weasley, Ron’s sister, and they have three children. Ron and Hermione have two kids together.

Rowling apologized to readers who had been hoping for a Harry-Hermione coupling and were unhappy with the turn of events.

“I know, I’m sorry,” she said. “I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”

Incidentally, the upcoming issue of Wonderland was guest edited by Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the Harry Potter movies.

Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series, set a record for a first print run in the U.S. with 12 million copies.

And I was selfishly trying to pursue the acting thing on the other side of the country.
