The first civil suit against Harvey Weinstein over sexual assault accusations has been issued in London.
A woman alleges that the disgraced producer sexually assaulted her in London, with Jill Greenfield, a partner at local law film Fieldfisher, having filed the suit and applied for anonymity for her client. The move comes amid investigations from Scotland Yard following allegations of a number of women in the U.K.
The claim has been made against Weinstein, alongside the The Weinstein Co. and The Weinstein Co. U.K., and covers damages for personal injury, expenses, consequential loss including aggravated and exemplary damages and interest arising out of a series of sexual assaults inflicted on the claimant by the defendant.
In a statement, Fieldfisher said the claim was “expected to exceed £300,000 ($400,000),” with Greenfield adding that she would not be surprised if a group action against Weinstein followed.
“Ms Greenfield, who was instructed by her client less than a month ago, said she had had to act swiftly to protect her client’s ability to bring a claim so many years after the assault,” the statement continued.
Weinstein has denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex.
