Harry Dean Stanton, the longtime character actor with the world-weary face who carved out an exceptional career in such films as Paris, Texas and Cool Hand Luke, died Friday. He was 91.
Stanton, who also was memorable in Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), John Carpenter’s Escape From New York (1981), Repo Man (1984) and Pretty in Pink (1986) died Friday afternoon of natural causes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Stanton also was known for his role as Roman Grant on HBO’s Big Love, as well as a long-running relationship with director David Lynch. He appeared in the filmmaker’s Wild at Heart (1990), Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), the 1993 miniseries Hotel Room, The Straight Story (1999) and Inland Empire (2006).
Stars remembered the beloved actor across social media following the news of his death.
Twin Peaks co-creator Lynch shared a statement on Stanton’s passing, writing, “There went a great one. There’s nobody like Harry Dean. Everyone loved him. And with good reason.”
“RIP to the legendary Harry Dean Stanton. Impossible to cover his legacy in brief but here’s a few favs: ‘Alien’, ‘Paris Texas’, ‘Repo Man,’ ” director Edgar Wright tweeted.
Tweeted Jon Cryer, who starred with Stanton in Pretty in Pink: “Was an honor, man.”

Harry Dean Stanton was the definition of cool. On Alpha Dog, he wouldn’t leave a room w/o saying, “Love ya. Mean it.” Such a great guy. RIP
