“I look around this restaurant, and I can remember where I was sitting when different deals happened,” says Cecconi’s regular Charles King, a former agent who left WME in 2015 to start Macro Ventures (Laurene Powell Jobs is an investor), which produces content for the African-American, Latino and multicultural markets. As his president of production, in October he brought on Imagine Entertainment’s Kim Roth, also a Cecconi’s fixture. “I live in the neighborhood, so it’s one of my haunts,” she says. “I especially love the brunch — bright and airy and a little boozy.” Roth also appreciates the restaurant’s function as a crossroads between industries: “This whole area is kind of the art mecca, so there are always people from fashion, design and music in here, too.”
Macro currently is in preproduction on a hacker drama to be written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, a client of King’s during his WME tenure. And even as they develop their first project together, King is eager to nail down more creative ventures with the director of 2015 Sundance standout Dope (he also helmed HBO’s Confirmation), going so far as to hold a pseudo-power lunch during THR‘s breakfast-hour photo shoot. Asked about recent deals he has brokered on Cecconi’s patio, King jokes, “You mean other than the one I am trying to do right now?”
