McCain passed away just one day after his family issued a statement declaring that he had stopped treatments for brain cancer. The senator had stepped away from Washington in December in order to seek treatment. “John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict,” the statement read.
Whoopi Goldberg, who hosts The View with McCain’s daughter Meghan, tweeted, “Senator John McCain passed today, all i can think about..he never stopped trying to do his best. What an honor it’s been to know him. My condolences to the family he loved and adored and to his daughter & my friend @MeghanMcCain…from all my family, much love.”
Ellen DeGeneres, who had hosted McCain on Ellen, tweeted, “I was honored to have met John McCain. He always stood up for what he believed was right. Sending love to his family on this very sad day for our country.”
The View show page issued a tribute, stating, “Tonight we lost an American hero. We send our deepest sympathies to Meghan, Cindy, and the entire McCain family.@TheView family honors the life and legacy of Sen. John McCain — the beloved father and husband who devoted his life to serving our country.”

Couldn’t disagree more with Senator McCain on policy but there’s no denying he was a hero who served our country admirably. He deserved so much better in his final years…the bullying by Trump and his supporters was awful.

For many of us for many years @SenJohnMcCain represented the opposition. Yet in spite of that, I’m broken up at his passing. I never met him, never knew him at all. But I am certain he was a good man; brave, honorable, patriotic, and moral. We’ve lost him, but not his example.

I sure didn’t always agree with John McCain, but I respect that he had the integrity to put country before party and to stand up against his party when his convictions required it. Because he had convictions. Donald Trump isn’t fit to say McCain’s name. RIP, Senator.

John McCain was a straight shooter who walked the talk, called it like it was and never bullshitted anyone. I had the privilege of meeting him on more than one occasion. He was of an old guard, an elected official who put the needs of the people above party and ego. He will be missed…
