THR 2013 Covers Split - H 2014
The Hollywood Reporter has landed its first nomination for the prestigious National Magazine Awards, which are handed out by the American Society of Magazine Editors.
The awards “honor print and digital publications that consistently demonstrate superior execution of editorial objectives, innovative techniques, noteworthy journalistic enterprise and imaginative art direction.”

THR has been nominated in the category of general excellence — special interest, which “honors magazines serving highly defined reader communities.” THR will vie for the award alongside Los Angeles magazine, entrepreneur-targeted Inc., Landscape Architecture Magazine and Modern Farmer.
THR is the second-youngest of all nominated magazines this year, with only Modern Farmer debuting after THR‘s Nov. 3, 2010, magazine launch.
“This general excellence nomination is a great acknowledgement of the work the entire Hollywood Reporter staff has done to turn an almost-dead publication into one of the top media titles in just three years,” said Janice Min, co-president and chief creative officer of the Entertainment Group of Guggenheim Media.
The three issues submitted for consideration were the 2013 Oscars, Cannes and New York issues.

THR‘s worldwide digital audience has grown more than 40 percent in the last 12 months according to comScore (February 2013 through February 2014), setting monthly records in December and January with a high of 14.01 million uniques.
Vying for magazine of the year honors will be Esquire, Bon Appetit, The Atlantic, Fast Company and New York Magazine, the latter of which led all nominees with a total of nine mentions.
“The range of this year’s finalists is testament to the vitality of magazine media,” said Sid Holt, chief executive of ASME. “Every day media consumers turn to magazines for practical information and advice about their passions and interests. Also growing is readers’ interest in the kind of long-form journalism and digital storytelling that only magazines can deliver. Whatever readers are looking for, they know the best place to find it is in magazines — and that’s what these nominations show, that the quality of magazine journalism both in print and on digital platforms is at an all-time high.”
Established in 1966, the awards are sponsored by ASME in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and are administered by ASME. Sixty-six publications were nominated this year in 24 categories.
Known as the Ellies — for the Alexander Calder stabile “Elephant” given to each award winner — the National Magazine Awards will be presented at a May 1 dinner at the New York Marriott Marquis.
