Hollywood Reporter Tops SoCal Journalism Awards With 10 Wins Including Best Website

The Hollywood Reporter was named best website at the Los Angeles Press Club’s 57th Southern California Journalism Awards, while television editor Lacey Rose won for entertainment journalist of the year.

THR took home a total of 10 awards — more than any other news outlet — at the gala ceremony, held Sunday night at The Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. This marks the third consecutive year that THR.com has been named best website at the SoCal Awards.

Seth Abramovitch, senior writer, won the magazine personality profile award for his piece “‘X-Men’s’ Ellen Page on Life After Coming Out, the Bryan Singer Case and Her Battle With Depression.”

Contributing editor Scott Johnson won two awards, in the investigative and crime reporting categories for “A ‘Survivor’ Producer, a Dead Wife, Four Years in a Mexican Prison: New Evidence Amid a Nightmare.” 

THR editor-at-large Kim Masters won the hard news award for “Sony Terrorized: The Panic, Fear and Fury.”

Best obituary went to online deputy editor Kimberly Nordyke for her piece “Robin Williams Dies of Suspected Suicide.”

Awards analyst Scott Feinberg won for best feature under 1,000 words for his piece “At Home With Jerry Lewis as He Opens Up About Son’s Death, Skirmishes With Fans.”

In the entertainment photo category, photo and video director Jennifer Laski, creative director Shanti Marlar, photo editor-at-large Jenny Sargent and photographer Andrew Hetherington won for “John Oliver.”

Contributing editor Degen Pener, deputy editor Jeanie Pyun and writer Leslie McKenzie won best travel feature for “How to Do Summer Malibu Style.”

Heading into the ceremony, THR had received a total of 48 nominations, more than any other news organization. Organizers said this was the “most competitive year in the Los Angeles Press Club’s recent memory with close to a thousand entries.”

Also honored at the ceremony were CBS This Morning hosts Norah O’Donnell, Charlie Rose and Gayle King with the President’s Award for impact on media; USC Annenberg School of Journalism director Willow Bay with the Joseph M. Quinn Award for lifetime achievement; Charlie Hebdo with the Daniel Pearl Award for courage and integrity in journalism; and Vice News’ Shane Smith with the public service award for journalistic contributions to civic life.
