Fifteen years ago, Stefani, who was wearing pink cornrows at the time (she had just finished shooting the video "Ex-Girlfriend" for No Doubt), met rock-star hairstylist Danilo: "It was backstage at a Vivienne Westwood show in New York City — the first fashion show I'd ever been to — and Danilo was doing the hair," Stefani tells THR. "Afterward, I begged to have him flown in for our 'Simple Kind of Life' video. He gave me this really big pink afro and I've been addicted to him ever since."

When a star makes a showstopping turn on the red carpet, her face can launch a thousand lips — or lipstick sales: Angelina Jolie‘s devilishly red pout (THR beauty moment No. 17) helped the corresponding color in the MAC Maleficent collection sell out in weeks. A Hollywood look also can reposition an actress, a la Lizzy Caplan‘s Emmy moment (No. 18), or help her land a major contract. Note Lupita Nyong’o‘s multimillion-dollar Lancome deal — Beyond the Lights’ Gugu Mbatha-Raw certainly did (No. 23), and quickly added Nyong’o’s glam squad to her speed-dial. Which is why a look that gets people (and beauty bloggers) talking about a star’s makeup — or lack of it, as in Jennifer Aniston‘s much-debated makeup-less face in her upcoming film Cake — can have an impact that outlasts even the longest-wear mascara.
In 2014, the looks that packed the biggest punch all resonated with calculated drama. Attention-drawing pink pouts proliferated, including Emily Blunt‘s carefully clashing Pepto Bismol lips against her red Prada gown at her New York Edge of Tomorrow premiere (No. 2). The artful placement of white blooms on the nape of Sarah Jessica Parker‘s neck focused the world’s eyes on the elaborate train of her Oscar de la Renta gown at the Met Gala (No. 5).
With so much at stake, new faces such as Mbatha-Raw and Felicity Jones (No. 25) might wish to follow the lead of such A-list veterans as Gwen Stefani, Salma Hayek and Cameron Diaz (Nos. 3, 9 and 12), all over 40. They keep gorgeous, glam and relevant by relying on their longtime beauty pros, who make up partnerships that outlast many Hollywood marriages. Call it a mix of loyalty and the smartest kind of calculation.
