Greg Summitt, the founder of video distributor Westlake Entertainment Group, died Jan. 4 in Los Angeles following a long battle with cancer. He was 67.
Summitt launched Westlake in 1994 and went on to assemble one of the largest independent libraries in the home entertainment industry. The company was sold in 2009 to Osiris Entertainment.
Working under his banner GS Productions, Summitt also produced and hosted documentaries and special-interest DVD series on hunting and hot rods, classic cars and road rallies.
Born in Watsonville, Calif., Summitt spent much of his youth in Arkansas and studied at the Memphis School of Business before continuing his studies at California State University, Los Angeles.
Summitt began his career as an actor, studying under Stella Adler, Jean Self, Tracy Roberts and Clu Gulager. He then spent several years at Safari Club International, working with sportsman Ken Wilson, producer of the Sportsmen on Film series, before becoming an independent producer and launching Westlake.
Survivors include his daughter, Brittany, and his brother, Dexter.
