Hong Kong documentary The Helper, an inside look into the lives of migrant domestic workers in the city-state, has secured international distribution.
The film shines a spotlight on the lives of migrant female workers who leave their families and home countries behind in search of work. The uplifting story follows the Unsung Heroes, a choir of Filipino domestic workers, and their efforts to perform on stage at Clockenflap, Hong Kong’s biggest music festival.
In Hong Kong, The Helper had a sellout 11-week theatrical run, a rarity for locally made documentaries.
The Helper was written, directed and produced by Hong Kong-based British director Joanna Bowers and co-produced by Tony Verb.
In the U.S., the film will be available on Comcast, Dish Network, Cox and others. In Canada, Shaw and Eastlink TV will offer the documentary.
The Helper will be available on VOD services globally on July 24.
