Box-office hit Ip Man 3, currently in cinemas and having grossed an impressive $7.7 million locally to date, on Monday received eight Hong Kong Film Award nominations.
The movie stars Donnie Yen as the titular character and co-stars former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. The first Ip Man pic won best film honors at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2009.
Hong Kong-China blockbuster The Taking of Tiger Mountain, which took over $150 million in China, earned 11 noms, including for best film, director and actor.
Crime mystery Port of Call led all nominees with 13 mentions, including for best film, director, actor and actress.
The best actor category features a showdown between three of 1990s pop music’s “Four Heavenly Kings” — Lost and Love‘s Andy Lau, Port of Call‘s Aaron Kwok and Heaven in the Dark‘s Jacky Cheung — along with Tiger Mountain‘s Tony Leung Ka Fai and Keeper of Darkness‘ Nick Cheung.
Previous best actress winner Miriam Yeung has been nominated once again in the category for her role as a school headmistress in 2015’s highest-grossing Hong Kong film, Little Big Master, alongside Tang Wei for A Tale of Three Cities, Sylvia Chang for Office, Karena Lam for Heaven in the Dark and Jessie Li for Port of Call.
Controversial political omnibus film Ten Years is among the nominees in the best film category. The pic, about what might happen in Hong Kong a decade later, overtook Star Wars: The Force Awakens on a per-screen average and became the talk of the town for its provocative subject matter.
